The Mekong River Delta tour from Ho Chi Minh City reveals a vibrant world of riverside life, floating markets, and centuries-old temples. From fishing villages to lush rice paddies, this journey showcases the heart of Vietnam’s Mekong region and the rich traditions of its communities. After my first taste of Vietnam in Saigon, from bustling streets to unforgettable street food, I was eager to explore beyond the city. My journey then led me to the Mekong River Delta, where rivers, temples, and local flavors awaited. Read about my first day in Vietnam here.
🌊 Mekong River Delta Tour: Exploring Life Along the Water
The Mekong threads through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, China, and Myanmar, nourishing fertile fields and sustaining complex ecosystems. For locals, it’s more than a river—it’s a lifeline, shaping daily routines from fishing to farming. The Mekong River Delta is more than a destination—it’s a living, breathing world. From stilt houses to floating markets, from golden sunsets to sweet tropical fruits, this adventure revealed the heartbeat of Vietnam and reminded me why I love to travel slowly and attentively.

We started in bustling Ho Chi Minh City. We hopped into a GrabCar to reach Trippy Travel Agency and check in with our Klook voucher. After a comforting breakfast of hot caramel macchiato and a ham-and-cheese egg sandwich at Starbucks (VND115,000 / Php252), we went to our assigned bus.
🏯 Vinh Trang Pagoda: A Serene Mekong Temple Experience
After two hours on the road, we reached Vinh Trang Pagoda, a tranquil Buddhist temple known for its majestic reclining Buddha and peaceful gardens. The serenity of the grounds offered a reflective pause before our river adventure, and I couldn’t help but admire the intricate architecture and serene atmosphere.

The two-hour ride to My Tho gave me a front-row seat to the Vietnamese countryside. Endless rice paddies, swaying palms, and temples peeking through greenery made me forget the urban chaos. I remember thinking I needed this calm. Travel really slows time down in the best way. The gentle hum of the motorbike and the warm breeze against my skin added to the peaceful atmosphere. It was a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

These tiny moments made me feel like I was stepping into a living painting, one that had its own heartbeat and stories to tell. It was a feeling I never wanted to forget. I wandered slowly, letting my fingers brush the cool temple rails, listening to soft chants and distant water sounds.
🚤 Floating Through Villages and Fruit Orchards
At the pier, a boat rocked gently on the water, ready to carry us through the delta. Along the river, stilt houses hovered above the waterline, colorful fruit plantations dotted the banks, and fishing villages moved to a calm rhythm. Motorized boats zipped past, carrying fresh tropical fruits whose aromas mingled with the river breeze.

While drifting along the river, I noticed how daily life unfolds differently here. Children waved shyly from stilted homes, and vendors in small boats called out friendly greetings. Every turn of the river revealed new scenes—small temples, lush orchards, and communities working in harmony. The Mekong has inspired stories, songs, and legends for centuries, and seeing it firsthand was unforgettable. A dog barked somewhere, making our boat rock slightly—it made me laugh. These little moments, so ordinary for locals, felt magical from my outsider’s perspective. The river is a storyteller if you just take the time to listen.
The Mekong River Delta tour isn’t just sightseeing—it’s a glimpse into a way of life perfected over generations. These moments reminded me: it’s not just about seeing sights—it’s about witnessing everyday life, learning patience and skill, and the beauty of simple routines.
🐟 Tortoise Islet Lunch & Coconut Candy Factory Delights
Tortoise Islet welcomed us with a hearty lunch—golden-fried fish stole the show from tender pork dishes. Afterward, a coconut candy factory offered a sweet spectacle, with skilled workers transforming fresh coconuts into caramelized delights.

I asked a worker how long it takes to make a batch. “About an hour, if you are careful,” she said with a smile. It reminded me that every sweet treat carries both effort and pride—a simple moment that captured the human side of tourism. The aroma of caramelized sugar wrapped around us like a warm hug. Watching workers skillfully turn coconuts into candy was fascinating.

And then…a live python and a massive jar of snake wine. I froze for a second, then laughed nervously and snapped a photo. Travel isn’t complete without a little daring, right?
🛶 Gentle River Cruises, Tropical Fruits & Sunset Reflections
We boarded a small, non-motorized boat, drifting slowly down the river. Sunlight danced on honeyed drinks served with dragon fruit, bananas, and pineapples—each bite a burst of tropical joy. I closed my eyes for a moment, letting the gentle rocking of the boat, the scent of fruit, and the soft river breeze sink in. This is peace, I thought. Pure and unhurried.

As the boat drifted under the late afternoon sun, I reflected on the contrast between bustling Ho Chi Minh City and the calm, timeless Mekong. Sipping sweet dragon fruit juice, I felt a rare sense of stillness. These small moments—the gentle rocking of the boat, the distant chatter of children, the scent of ripe fruit—are the ones that stay with me long after the trip ends.
🚌 Bánh Mì at Twilight & Pho to Close the Day
Back in the city, hunger called again. We enjoyed fresh bánh mì for just VND 12,000 (Php 27.00), followed by aromatic coffee. Later, over steaming bowls of pho at Ben Thanh Market, we reflected on the day. Vietnam’s football team had just won a match, and celebration spilled into the streets—a perfect, lively end to a memorable adventure.

The streets celebrated with flags, honking horns, and cheers. I didn’t know who they played against, but the joy was contagious. Even in a city I barely knew, I felt like part of the celebration.
✨ Where Currents Carry Culture and Memory
Looking back, I realize that a Mekong River Delta tour is more than an itinerary. It’s an immersion into a living culture shaped by water, weather, and community, where every smile, every boat, every temple tells a story. Sharing these experiences makes me appreciate the quiet power of travel—the way it slows down time, sharpens observation, and opens the heart.

It’s a living lesson in culture, patience, and connection. Every wave, every smile, every floating market moment leaves an impression.
For travelers seeking authenticity, connection, and moments that slow time, the Mekong promises memories that linger long after the journey ends.
