Nami Island in December: What to Expect, Tickets, Ferry & Winter Tips

There is a reason Nami Island in December continues to draw travelers looking for a taste of winter in South Korea. Of course, Winter Sonata helped put this little river island on the map, but there’s more to visiting in December than following the footsteps of a Korean drama. Nami Island isn’t just a park. It calls itself the “Naminara Republic,” a playful micro-nation with its own passport-style entry ticket, imaginary visa stamps, and a sense of humor about the whole thing.

How I Got to Nami Island from Seoul

I took the subway from Hoehyeon Station to Gapyeong Station, with two transfers along the way. It sounds a little complicated when written out, but once you break it down, the route is fairly straightforward.

My route was:

  1. Hoehyeon Station (Line 4) → Ichon Station
    • I took Line 4 toward Oido and got off at Ichon Station.
  2. Ichon Station → Sangbong Station
    • At Ichon, I transferred to the Gyeongui-Jungang Line heading toward Jipyeong and continued to Sangbong Station.
  3. Sangbong Station → Gapyeong Station
    • From Sangbong, I transferred to the Gyeongchun Line toward Chuncheon and stayed on the train until Gapyeong Station.

Once I arrived at Gapyeong Station, I walked toward the Gapyeong Tourist Information Center. The lady there handed me a Gapyeong City Tour Bus brochure and told me I could wait at the bus stop just outside the information center. The Gapyeong City Tour Bus connects several of the area’s popular attractions, including Nami Island, Petite France, Italian Village, and Garden of Morning Calm.

Quick facts:

  • Fare: Around KRW 8,000 for an all-day pass, paid directly to the driver by cash (December 2023)
  • Type: Hop-on, hop-off tour bus
  • Main stops: Gapyeong Rail Bike, Jarasum Island, Nami Island (via the Gapyeong Wharf ferry), Petite France, the Italian Village, and the Garden of the Morning Calm

Is Nami Island Worth Visiting in December?

If you’ve mostly seen Nami Island in autumn photos, December will look quite different. The colorful foliage is mostly gone, and the island takes on a quieter winter feel. When I visited in December, I enjoyed seeing this less colorful side of Nami Island instead of comparing it with the autumn version I’d seen online.

There was no snow during my visit, but it was still cold, and I spent plenty of time walking outdoors. For me, the biggest lesson was simply to come prepared for winter and give yourself enough time to enjoy Nami Island without rushing through it.

Expect Winter, Not an Autumn Postcard

  • 🥶 Cold weather: December is winter in Korea, so come prepared for low temperatures and plenty of time outdoors. Check the forecast for your actual travel date rather than relying on a general temperature range.
  • 🌲 Winter scenery: Don’t expect the red, orange, and yellow foliage you see in autumn photos. The island’s famous tree-lined paths look much more bare and wintry in December.
  • ❄️ Snow is possible: A snowy Nami Island would certainly add to the winter atmosphere, but snowfall isn’t guaranteed on your particular day.
  • 🚶 Plenty of walking: You’ll be spending much of your visit outdoors, so warm layers and comfortable shoes matter more than you might think.

Nami Island Ticket Price: What You Need to Know

When I visited Nami Island in December 2023, I paid KRW 16,000 for a round-trip ticket, which included the ferry ride to and from the island. The online vouchers are consistently a few thousand won cheaper. I purchased my round-trip ticket at the main ticket counter at Gapyeong Wharf.

If you’re comfortable booking ahead, the voucher route saves money; if you’d rather decide same-day, you can simply pay at the ticket booth at Gapyeong Wharf. Either way, admission includes the round-trip ferry ride, so there’s no separate ferry fare to budget for.

💡 Tip: Prices are checked periodically but can change. It’s worth a glance at the official Nami Island website or your booking platform before you go. Check the official Nami Island website for current ferry and admission rates before you go.

Nami Island Ferry Schedule: What to Know

The ferry is the main way most visitors get to Nami Island, and the good news is that you don’t need to book a specific ferry departure. Your Nami Island admission already includes the round-trip ferry ride, so once you have your ticket, you can head to the wharf and wait for the next available boat.

For my December 2023 visit, I simply followed the regular process at the wharf. There was no separate ferry ticket to worry about because it was already included in my KRW 16,000 admission.

💡 Practical Tips for Boarding. Large tour buses from Seoul typically arrive between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM. Arriving at the wharf by 08:30 AM – 09:00 AM allows you to walk straight onto a ferry without queuing.

My Practical Tips for Visiting Nami Island in December

I went in December expecting winter scenery, but there was no snow during my visit. If seeing a snowy Nami Island is important to you, keep in mind that snow isn’t guaranteed just because you’re visiting in December. These are the things I’d keep in mind if I were planning the trip again:

  • ✅ Arrive early, ideally before 10 AM, to enjoy quieter paths and softer morning light for photos. Large tour groups from Seoul generally arrive at Gapyeong Pier between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM, causing long ferry queues and crowded photo spots.
  • ✅ Wear comfortable shoes. Paths are mostly flat but long, and gravel sections are common. Wear waterproof shoes or winter boots with thick, deep rubber treads to prevent slipping.
  • ✅ Bring small cash for food stalls, since not every vendor takes cards.
  • ✅ Give Yourself Time to Wander. Come prepared for the cold, start early, and leave yourself enough time to wander. You don’t need snow or perfect autumn colors to enjoy Nami Island.
  • ✅ Pair it with one or two other stops. Nami Island alone takes half a day; most visitors combine it with Petite France or the Garden of Morning Calm using the Gapyeong Tourist Shuttle Bus.

Don’t make your itinerary so packed that you only have time to take a few photos and move on to the next attraction. I enjoyed simply walking around and taking in the island at my own pace. If you’re visiting as part of a larger Gapyeong itinerary, give Nami Island enough time to actually feel like a destination rather than just another stop on a checklist.

What to See and Do on Nami Island

Nami Island is more than its famous tree-lined paths. You can explore on foot, look for wildlife, rent a bike, or simply stop for a snack along the way. For me, it offered a quieter side of Nami Island in December, even though there was no snow during my visit.

For the Winter Sonata fans: a familiar scene on Nami Island.
  • 🌳 Walk the Tree-Lined Paths. The metasequoia-lined path is probably the most recognizable spot on Nami Island. I explored Maple Lane, Chestnut Lane, and Weeping Willow Lane, each with its own character.
  • 🪦 Visit General Nami’s Tomb. The island is named after General Nami, a military figure from the Joseon period. His tomb is located near the center of the island and offers a quieter stop during your walk.
  • 🐿️ Look Out for Wildlife. There are rabbits, squirrels, and peacocks around the island. I came across some of them while walking from one area to another, which was a nice little surprise along the way.
  • 🚲 Rent a Bike. Want to cover more ground? Bike rentals are available on the island, with options for individuals, couples, and families. I didn’t rent one myself because, well, I don’t know how to ride a bike. 😅 So I explored Nami Island on foot instead.
  • 🍢 Grab a snack. There are restaurants, cafés, and food stalls around Nami Island, so you can stop for something to eat or drink during your visit.
  • 🎬 Visit Winter Sonata Filming Spots. As a fan of Winter Sonata, I recognized some of Nami Island’s most photographed spots. The 2002 K-drama was filmed on the island and helped put Nami Island on the map for Korean drama fans around the world.

Overall, I found that the best way to experience Nami Island was simply to take my time. Walk the paths, stop when something catches your attention, and don’t feel like you have to check off every attraction. There is plenty to see along the way.

Nami Island December Weather: What Should You Wear?

December is winter in Nami Island, so you’ll want to dress for cold weather and plenty of time outdoors. There was no snow during my visit, but it was still cold enough that I was glad to be dressed for winter.

  • 🧥 Dress in Layers. I spent a lot of time walking around outdoors. If you’re coming from a tropical country, layers are especially useful because you can adjust what you’re wearing as the day goes on. A warm jacket or coat, along with other winter layers, is a good starting point.
  • 🧣 Keep Yourself Warm. Don’t forget the small things that make a difference in cold weather. A scarf, gloves, and something to keep your ears warm can make walking around much more comfortable. You don’t need a complicated winter wardrobe. The important thing is being comfortable enough to stay outdoors for several hours.
  • 👟 Wear Comfortable Shoes. Nami Island is easy to explore on foot, but you’ll likely walk quite a bit. Choose comfortable shoes with good grip rather than footwear that’s mainly for photos. I spent a good part of my visit walking from one area to another, so comfortable footwear matters more than having the perfect travel outfit.

Dress warmly, wear comfortable shoes, and be prepared to spend a good part of your visit outdoors. December may not give you the snowy Nami Island you see in some winter photos, but you can still have a really enjoyable visit.

FAQs: Nami Island in December

How cold is Nami Island in December?
December is winter, so expect cold temperatures, particularly when you’re spending several hours outdoors. Dress warmly and bring layers, especially if you’re visiting from a tropical country.

How long should I spend on Nami Island?
I’d allow at least 3–4 hours if you want to walk around without rushing. You can spend longer if you want to explore more of the island, eat, take photos, or simply take your time.

Does it snow on Nami Island in December?
It can snow in December, but snow isn’t guaranteed. There was no snow during my December 2023 visit, so don’t plan your trip assuming the island will be covered in snow.

Can I visit Nami Island, Petite France, Italian Village, and Garden of Morning Calm all in one day?
Yes, and it’s a common combination sold as a set day tour. It’s tight, though. Each stop gets compressed to roughly 1.5–2.5 hours instead of a full half-day, and Garden of Morning Calm in particular is hard to reach by public transit, so a private van or organized tour is the easiest way to do all four comfortably in a single day.

Are the facilities and restaurants open during winter?
Yes, all major restaurants, cozy indoor cafes, souvenir shops, and food stalls remain fully open throughout December. Public restrooms are heated, and outdoor wood-burning fire pits are maintained along main paths for warmth.

My December Nami Island Takeaway

When I finally made it to Nami Island in December 2023, I wasn’t greeted by the colorful autumn scenery I had seen in so many photos. There was no snow either. It was simply cold, quiet, and very different from what I had imagined. It’s the atmosphere of the whole place: the quiet paths, tall trees, and slower pace that make you want to keep walking instead of rushing from one spot to another.

Was it worth visiting in December? For me, yes. Just don’t go expecting the classic autumn postcard or a guaranteed snowy winter scene. Come prepared for the cold, give yourself enough time to explore, and let the island unfold at its own pace. Sometimes, that’s the best part of a place like Nami Island.

I wrapped up 2023 with an adventure to the land of K-Pop, a journey that felt like a dream, yet came with its own moments of truth. A few unexpected mishaps added some spice to the trip, but in the end, I was simply grateful to finally tick South Korea off my bucket list. Sometimes the places that once inspired our dreams are the same places that remind us how far we’ve come.
