Is Nami Island a good day trip from Seoul? Yes, it’s about 1 to 1.5 hours away and easy to visit in a single day, especially during autumn when the foliage is at its best.
I didn’t plan on going back to Nami Island. I’d already checked it off back in 2023, as part of a wider Gapyeong day trip that also took me to Petite France and the Garden of Morning Calm, and it felt like one of those places you visit once and file away as “done.” Then in 2024, my sister suggested I should go, and just like that, I was booking a Nami Island day trip from Seoul for the second time.

I thought I knew what I was walking back into. I didn’t, not exactly. Going somewhere for the first time and going back alone, years later, turn out to be two very different experiences, even when the place itself hasn’t changed much at all.

Why I Returned to Nami Island
So, why did I go back? Honestly, I don’t think I had one big reason. Maybe I just wanted to see Nami Island again. My first visit in 2023 was filled with that excitement of finally being there, part of my first winter in Seoul as a first-time visitor to South Korea. I was taking photos, looking at everything, walking through the tree-lined paths, and trying to take it all in.

But after I went home, I realized there were little things I hadn’t really noticed. I wanted an autumn day on the island. Another walk under the trees. Another chance to slow down without worrying about checking every place off a list. And this time, I wasn’t completely unfamiliar with the place anymore.
How to Get to Nami Island from Seoul
Here’s what my actual route looked like, not the generic version you’ll find everywhere. I took the subway most of the way: Seoul → Ichon → Sangbong → Gapyeong
My route was:
- Line 4 toward Oido: Seoul → Ichon
- Gyeongui-Jungang Line toward Jipyeong: Ichon → Sangbong
- Gyeongchun Line toward Chuncheon: Sangbong → Gapyeong

The Gyeongchun Line is the one that takes you toward Gapyeong, the station you’ll want for Nami Island. Once I got off at Gapyeong Station, I figured I’d just hop on the Gapyeong City Tour Bus that loops around to the wharf. That was the plan, anyway.
I Ended Up Walking to the Wharf
While I was standing around waiting for a Gapyeong City Tour Bus near the Gapyeong Tourist Information Center, I overheard a solo female traveler asking for walking directions to the wharf. I didn’t ask her anything.

I just quietly started walking in the same direction she did, a few steps behind, like I somehow needed a stranger to lead me somewhere I could have looked up myself. 😂 The walk ended up being longer than the bus would have been and a little more scenic too.
I don’t regret it.
From the Wharf to Nami Island
Once I reached the wharf, I crossed over by ferry rather than taking the zipline. I’d already booked my Nami Island entry ticket through Klook, and I paid ₱472.10. For current ticket prices, ferry schedules, and events, check the official Nami Island website.
Having the ticket sorted before I even got there made this part surprisingly painless. I didn’t have to stand around figuring out where to buy one. I just showed up, got through the process, and crossed over to the island. After all those subway transfers and that unexpected walk, I was finally on my way to Nami Island.
Gapyeong City Tour Bus or Walk?
If you’re planning your own Seoul to Nami Island trip, you have two options once you get to Gapyeong Station.
Recommended: Take the Gapyeong City Tour Bus
If you’re tired from the subway ride or simply want to save your legs, the Gapyeong City Tour Bus is the easier choice. It’s a local sightseeing bus that connects major attractions around Gapyeong.
🚍 Gapyeong City Tour Bus: What to Know
- 🎟️ Ticket: Buy from the driver when you board.
- 💳 Fare: ₩8,000 adults; ₩6,000 discounted fare.
- 💰 Payment: Cash
- 🔄 Daily pass: Hop on and off along the route during the day.
- 📍 Gapyeong Station: The stop is in front of the station.
- 🚌 Reboarding: Show your boarding ticket when you get back on.
So if you’re carrying a backpack, visiting during autumn when the area can get busy, or simply don’t feel like walking, I’d recommend taking the bus.
Must-Do: Walk if you’re not in a rush.
I ended up walking to the wharf instead. It took me about 32 minutes, but it was also a little more scenic. I used Naver Map to guide me along the way, so I didn’t have to worry about getting lost. Would I do it again? Probably. 😂 It took longer, but I didn’t regret it. Sometimes the slower option ends up becoming part of the travel story.

Nami Island in Autumn
I got there around 10 AM, and the foliage was thick, with proper autumn color in yellow, red, and orange all at once, not the patchy in-between stage you sometimes get if you’re too early or too late.

The weather was cool, that specific kind of cool that feels like the season is tipping into early winter without having gotten there yet. As for crowds, 10 AM turned out to be a decent time to arrive. It wasn’t empty, but it wasn’t overwhelming either; manageable is the word I’d use.
Autumn is the season Nami Island is known for, and it’s easy to see why once you’re actually walking through it. It’s less about any single photo-worthy spot and more about the sheer amount of it, tree after tree, color after color, for as long as you keep walking.
🌿 Quick Tip: Stay Overnight If You Can. I visited Nami Island as a day tripper, but if you want to experience its quieter side, staying overnight might be worth considering. The early morning views without the crowds, and having the island settle down in the evening, sound like a pretty good reason to stay a little longer.
What I Did During My Nami Island Day Trip
Honestly, the day was simple: I walked, and I looked at trees. Lots of them, in full autumn color, one after another. That was more or less the whole itinerary, and it didn’t need to be more complicated than that.

- 🍂 Walk through the tree-lined paths. This is probably the main attraction, especially during autumn. Take your time, wander around, and stop whenever you find a pretty spot.
- 📸 Take photos around the island. Nami Island is very photo-friendly, from the famous tree roads to seasonal scenery and little corners along the paths.
- 🚶 Explore without a strict itinerary. You don’t necessarily need to rush from one attraction to another. Part of the experience is simply walking around and seeing what catches your attention.
- 🍱 Try Korean food. You can stop for lunch or snacks around the island. If you’re interested in the nostalgic side of Nami Island, Yeongajiga’s old-school Korean lunch box is one memorable option.
- 🎬 Look for Winter Sonata connections. Fans of Winter Sonata can look for filming-location references and memorabilia around the island.
- 🎨 Check out the art and installations. Nami Island has more than just trees. You’ll find sculptures, artwork, and quirky installations as you explore.
- 🌿 Enjoy the seasonal scenery. Autumn is particularly beautiful, but the island changes with the seasons, so there’s something different to see throughout the year.
I won’t pretend the day followed some perfect itinerary. I didn’t plan it out stop-by-stop. I just followed the paths, stopped where the trees looked good, and kept going. If you want a proper meal on the island, Seomhyanggi does dakgalbi, and Nammoon is worth it if you’re after more traditional Korean food.
Winter Sonata Nostalgia
I think one of the reasons Nami Island felt special to me was because it wasn’t completely new. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I had already been there before. Not physically, of course. But through Korean dramas. Winter Sonata belongs to that generation of Korean dramas that made South Korea feel like a faraway place we somehow already knew.
From TV Screen to Nami Island
Walking beneath the trees, I had one of those funny travel moments where an old TV memory suddenly became real. Nami Island has changed a lot since Winter Sonata, but the nostalgia is still there if you know where to look.

I remember thinking about how strange it was that a place I once knew only through television had somehow become one of my own travel memories.
Yeongajiga: A Nostalgic Korean Lunch Box
One of the things I remember most was having an old-school Korean lunchbox at Yeongajiga (연가지가), a nostalgic restaurant on the island known for that exact lunchbox, served in a metal container you shake before eating, filled with simple comfort food like rice, kimchi, egg, and Spam.

It reminds me that sometimes our travel dreams don’t begin with a flight booking or an itinerary. Sometimes they begin much earlier, while we’re sitting at home watching a story unfold on a screen, quietly thinking, “Maybe someday, I’ll see that place too.” And somehow, someday came.

Getting Back to Seoul
For the return trip, I decided to try something different: Gapyeong → Yongsan
Instead of taking the same route back, I took the KTX from Gapyeong to Yongsan Station. From Yongsan, I transferred to the subway and continued toward Seoul Station, using my T-money card. This ended up being the faster way back into the city. I’ll admit, taking the KTX felt like a bit of a leap of faith.
- Train: KTX
- Route: Gapyeong → Yongsan
- Cost: About ₩6,000
- Payment: Cash
Most of my day had been pretty low-key: subway rides, walking around Nami Island, and taking my time. Then suddenly I was adding a high-speed train into the mix for the trip home.
Myeongdong Food Trip & Holiday Glow
The day didn’t quite end once I got back into Seoul. For dinner, I headed to Myeongdong, a place I hold dear, and grabbed street food instead of sitting down somewhere pricier.

With the holiday lights up, the whole night had a festive feel, and Myeongdong is more than a shopping district for me. It’s a feeling, a memory, a tradition. More on that trip another time.
FAQs: Visiting Nami Island
Is Nami Island in Seoul?
No, it’s about 1 to 1.5 hours outside Seoul, accessed via Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do (though the island itself technically belongs to Gangwon Province).
How do I get to Nami Island from Seoul without a tour group?
Take the subway/train to Gapyeong Station, then either hop on the local tourist bus or walk to the wharf, followed by a short ferry ride to the island.
Is Nami Island worth visiting if I’ve already seen photos of it everywhere?
If you’re a fan of Winter Sonata or the Korean Wave era, or simply want a quieter, nature-focused day trip outside the city, it’s worth the trip. The atmosphere in person is calmer than photos suggest.
Can I visit Nami Island and get back to Seoul in one day?
Yes, it’s a realistic day trip. Just budget a full day given the travel time each way.
Is Nami Island good for solo travelers?
Yes. I went alone and had no trouble getting around, and the slower pace of the island actually suits solo travel well since there’s no need to coordinate with anyone else’s schedule.
What’s the best time of day to visit Nami Island in autumn?
Arriving around 10 AM worked well for me; crowds were manageable without the island feeling empty. If you want it even quieter, earlier is better, or consider staying overnight to catch the early morning before day-trippers arrive.
Who I Would Recommend Nami Island To
The island itself didn’t suddenly become a completely different place between my two visits. I did. The second time around, I wasn’t so focused on seeing everything. I could just walk under the trees, take in the colors, and enjoy being there again. And honestly, sometimes that’s enough of a reason to go back.
I’d recommend Nami Island if you:
- 🍂 Love autumn foliage and want an easy day trip from Seoul. The tree-lined paths become especially beautiful when the leaves change color, and it’s one of the best times to experience the island.
- 🎬 Grew up watching Winter Sonata or enjoyed visiting Korean drama locations with a bit of nostalgia attached. Seeing the familiar locations in person adds another layer to the experience.
- 📸 Enjoy taking photos, especially along tree-lined paths and seasonal scenery.
- 🚶 Like slow travel and don’t mind spending a few hours simply walking around without a packed itinerary.
- 🇰🇷 Are visiting Korea for the first time and want to experience one of the country’s well-known tourist spots, one that offers a completely different setting from palaces, shopping streets, and city neighborhoods?
- 👨👩👧👦 Are traveling with family or friends and want a destination where you can wander at your own pace.
For solo travelers like me, I think it works too, especially if you’re comfortable exploring without needing to fill every minute of the day. There’s no group to keep up with and no strict schedule to follow, so you can walk at your own pace, stop when something catches your eye, and linger wherever feels right.

Some of my favorite moments were the quiet, unplanned ones. If you enjoy your own company and don’t mind a slower rhythm, Nami Island is an easy, peaceful place to spend a day on your own.
